THE ASSOCIATES

Associating my business with a select choice of visionaries I trust has been a journey along a reasonably long winding ethical and creative road.

Wedding photography is a congested genre frequented by a plethora of photographers, some fortunate to practice professionally for many a year, a good proportion of new start-ups featuring a diverse range of abilities and those that simply do it for additional pennies because, well, they just like taking photographs.

I’ve hired assistants, tested second shooters and courted the prospect of assistant photographers during this journey, continually pulling up short of the finishing line for a variety of reasons when it came to hiring.

As my company, my wedding photography and industry experience has matured, so with it has my desire to associate myself with like minded professionals and photographers who can share my fervor for documentary wedding coverage, and desire to develop story telling methods, coverage and album design. It’s a lonely boat if sailed in single minded waters.

So the search has uncovered three talents of exceptionally varying experience – for which I’m unashamedly proud. You can read more about them and see examples of their work within their tabbed links, but in short…

GILES PENFOUND is a former celebrated war and conflict photographer. I’ve known him for a number of years and have a huge amount of respect for his work as a documentarian. Creatively drawn by the indubitable candor of his documentary work of the past and indeed present, I am genuinely thrilled and equally honoured that Giles should become my first Associate Photographer. I’m mindful that clients recognise the decision to see our working relationship as that of associates. We are undoubtedly our own people photographically.

NATALIE SHAW has been a long standing associate both personally and professionally. Hailing from my ‘radio days’ but equally very visually perceptive and creative, Natalie became picture editor at a time I’d just started to attract eighty plus wedding commissions per year. Shooting a wedding is but one part of the whole story and digital post production has assumed the mantle once held by post processing dark room professionals. Sulpher dioxide has been replaced by Mac speed envy and it’s a side of the business that is so integral to our reasonably lively output times.

CHRIS BURNELL joins the associate team mid mentor. I’ve worked with Chris on a number of wedding commissions constantly noting his developing eye for documentary coverage.

Examples of their work can be seen through the drop down menu and contact can be made with each through the contact tab.
