Cotswolds wedding venue | Wedding 365#108

If I could select Groundhog moments in wedding terms, this would be certainly feature high in the list of weddings I would happily live again and again. The wedding created plenty of opportunities for narrative rich photographs, where guests and the key players just seemed to engage with the frame and moment. Like this. The bride’s brother ecstatically and enthusiastically videos, the groom’s eyes close as he just tries to maintain some form of personal togetherness having just turned to greet his bride. Jennie and father look a picture of composition, though from an alternative parental point of view, I love the movement of the groom’s mother as she leaps into frame to comfort and reassure her son. Best man and (I think) his girlfriend just mirror the happiness of a scene unfolding. Assisted by soft beautiful window light directly behind me, this is one of those ‘photographic choir of angels signing in my ear’ moments. It’s a worthy inclusion in this year’s 365 series.

Dumbleton Hall wedding venue in the Cotswolds | Wedding 365#99

Documentary and reportage wedding photography has taught me observational lessons I don’t think I gained from my experiences in alternative photographic medium guises. Mirroring is something I see often at weddings, and this image displays that in exceptionally simple terms. As a record photograph from the day, this ticks that box.

Dumbleton Hall wedding | Wedding 365#92

What a difference a registrar can make. I’m treading slightly on eggshells as I venture forth to embrace this subject, but there are moments, just a few mind, when I think the officiant at a wedding is rather more officious, than warm and embracing. I get to witness this first usually, since ‘my kind’ are often read some kind of riot act before we even manage to profer a welcome. There is even one county close to home where photography is not even permitted during the ceremony at all! May my lens freeze on wastelands if I even raise the camera body to clean the glass. Where in the rule books except their own this appears I do not know, but I have watched from the wings as guests snap away on their own DSLRs and iPhones, whilst my compositions are denied. Still, “rules is rules” as they say downtown, and it’s not my place to argue with those in charge of this part of the day. But this registrar you see before you, well, he, is simply gold. He even asked me, how I would like to photograph the ceremony!!! I had to pinch myself. And to be fair, I was even more aware of the need to be subtle due to the mutual respect we had found. This photograph for me sums this registrar up to a tee. Not only was he humourous at the appropriate moments, solemn when required and utterly professional in his duties, he was downright celebratory and inviting. I have not seen a room of adults warm to a registrar in quite the same fashion. Magical, simply magical. I probably don’t need to talk ethos of image, because having read the above, I am sure you can piece together the story for yourself.

Dumbleton Hall wedding documentary | A stills film

Jamie and Jennie’s Dumbleton Hall wedding as a stills documentary film, or simply a ‘wedding documentary,’ as I am beginning to title these features. This wedding had it all; tears, laughter and emotion abound. Adding sound to my stills features is a relatively new form of album presentation. My radio background serves me well in this respect as I understand sound recording, compression and editing. The order may dance around to an extent, but I hope you feel the story of their day is recorded well. Let me know by dropping a quick comment below. The wedding venue is Dumbleton Hall in the Cotswolds.

Dumbleton Hall wedding photography | Jamie and Jennie

Look, from the outset, I’m a softy. My eldest little boy this week told me that I was; “The best daddy in the World,” for the first time. I cried. The Green Mile, Schindler’s List, Meet Joe Black; three films that you shouldn’t watch with me if the sight of a grown man shedding a tear embarrasses you. Unashamedly, I’m soft centered. For me, an observational emotional connect with my clients is important in documentary wedding photography terms. If you follow this blog and indeed the stories within my 365 project or main gallery images, it’s clear that I work stylistically cheek by jowl. I photograph primarily using short focal length lenses, that requires a closeness to the story unfolding before me. I hope the images in this blog piece demonstrate how in wedding story telling, it’s an approach and philosophy that can work well. You’ll be the judge and as ever I’d welcome your comments, either on the blog or by mail. Before you look further though, a further dimension to this story is that the couple concerned I count as friends, our bride Jennie having been a former work colleague when I frequented the radio airwaves. Jennie, I’m so incredibly proud of you for your accomplishments personally and of course latterly professionally, and look forward to hearing your reports as you jet the globe covering F1 2012. (I’m also a little bit envious, but shhhh, don’t tell anyone.) What an emotional day too. You underline why documenting these days has become a vocational life choice. And Jamie, thanks for letting Jen talk you in to allowing her softy friend to be present as photographer on your special day. Lots of love and I hope you enjoy this sneak preview.

Dumbleton Hall wedding photography | Alex and Jill

Few briefs make me happier than the one received from Alex and Jill; ‘Follow the day Neale, the way you see, as a story.’ Marvelous. And so, armed with a short list of group portraits we’d agreed pre-wedding, I was Cotswolds bound to Dumbelton Hall Hotel near Evesham. A brief so open gives me an opportunity to stand back, think composition and really watch the day unfold around me.
